26 organizations ask the federal agency to enact a ban on new gas appliances.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) received a petition this past week from 26 health, environmental, and consumer protection organizations asking for the imposition of a federal ban on new gas-powered heating appliances. The petition focuses on the health impacts of burning natural gas in homes and commercial buildings. They cited lung conditions being worsened by the high output of nitrogen oxides that come from burning natural gas.
The Department of Energy does not currently have regulations that address nitrogen oxides, a precursor to smog. The petition requests that the EPA introduce performance standards that will eventually lead to zero emissions from furnaces and water heaters by 2030. Heating devices would then have to be powered solely by electricity.
